Why Mindfulness and Yoga for Kids Belong in Every School

Recently, I had the opportunity to share the story of Yogi Squad on NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth.

We talked about mindfulness, movement, and the work we’re doing in schools.

But what stayed with me most wasn’t the conversation itself.

It was the reminder of why this work matters so much right now.

How Yogi Squad Began: Bringing Mindfulness Into Schools

Before Yogi Squad existed, I was a librarian. And I started noticing something that I couldn’t ignore.

Children were coming into school carrying more than just backpacks.
They were carrying overwhelm. Stress. Big emotions they didn’t yet understand how to process.

At the same time, I was going through yoga teacher training.

And what I was learning about breath, awareness, and emotional regulation felt too important to keep to myself.

Because these weren’t just “yoga tools.” They were life tools for kids.

So I started bringing mindfulness and movement into the library.

Pairing movement with stories.
Breath with moments of pause.
Mindfulness with literacy.

That small beginning is what eventually grew into Yogi Squad.

The Reality of Kids’ Mental Health Today

When we talk about kids’ mental health, it’s easy to underestimate what children are experiencing.

But today’s kids are navigating:

  • academic pressure

  • social challenges

  • increased screen time

  • chronic stress and emotional overwhelm

And yet…

We still expect them to:

  • sit still

  • focus

  • regulate their emotions

without ever teaching them how.

We’re asking for outcomes without providing the tools.

The Benefits of Yoga and Mindfulness for Kids

This is why yoga and mindfulness for kids are so important, especially in schools.

Not as an extra activity. But as something foundational.

When children learn simple mindfulness practices like breathwork and movement, they begin to:

  • improve focus and attention

  • build emotional regulation skills

  • feel more confident

  • develop self-awareness

  • feel safe and connected in their bodies

These are skills that support not just learning, but life.

Why Schools Need Mindfulness Programs

Schools are already supporting academic growth.

But more and more, they are also being asked to support emotional well-being.

The challenge is that most schools don’t have the time or resources to do both effectively.

That’s where mindfulness programs for schools make a real impact.

At Yogi Squad, we provide short, accessible “brain breaks” that fit directly into the school day.

These sessions include:

  • breathwork

  • mindful movement

  • emotional awareness practices

They don’t take time away from learning.

They support it.

What Makes Yogi Squad Different

Our programs go beyond traditional kids' yoga classes.

We combine:

  • mindfulness

  • movement

  • and literacy

Because stories help children understand their emotions.

They give language to what they’re feeling.

They create space for connection, empathy, and creativity.

This integrated approach allows children to engage both physically and emotionally—making the experience more meaningful and lasting.

Expanding Access to Mindfulness for Kids

Today, Yogi Squad serves over 2,500 children each month through in-school programming.

We also expand access through:

  • virtual mindfulness programs for schools

  • our Mindful Moments curriculum

  • free YouTube videos with breathing exercises and mindfulness tools

Because every child deserves access to emotional support tools, no matter where they are.

 Community Support Makes This Possible

As a nonprofit, Yogi Squad is supported by:

  • local donors

  • community foundations

  • grants and partnerships

This support allows us to bring mindfulness and yoga into more classrooms—and reach more children who need it.

What We Want Every Child to Learn

At the heart of everything we do is this:

Children don’t need to be “fixed.”

They need tools.

They need support.

They need to learn:

“I can notice how I feel.”
“I can take a breath.”
“I can choose how I respond.”

And when a child learns that, everything begins to change.
