SPACE YOGA CAMP!

Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting a Space Yoga Camp for sixty-something 2-5 year old yogis at FUMC in Downtown Fort Worth. Space is always one of my favorite themes to teach because kids really dig it and I get to be really outside of the box with my creativity. This year DID NOT disappoint!

Day one was all about ROCKETS! We practiced Rocket Ship Breath and got some wiggles out as we pretended to shoot to the moon. This one was a fan favorite, especially with the 2 year olds (who are mostly brand new to yoga, and me). It was so fun to see their little faces light up with excitement every time we blasted off the ground.

Our pose of the day was of course, Rocket Ship Pose, and we danced and learned some new yoga poses with thew song “Rocket Ship Run” by The Laurie Berkner Band.

On day two, the twos practiced blowing bubbles into outer space. The 3-5’s practiced Darth Vader Breathing. I was a little hesitant that even the older kids might be a little young for Darth Vader but boy did they prove me wrong. Your kids know more than I do about him. Darth Vader Breathing is very similar to Ujyayi Pranamya in Yoga. This kind of breathing encourages blood pressure and the heart rate to lower, calms the mind, and reduces anxiety. The kids loved this one, and I encourage you to practice with them at home!

We danced and learned a few more yoga poses with another fun song, “There’s a Lot of Space in Space”. We practiced some Space-themed Salutations to the Sun, including poses like comet, meteorite, and satellite (“Beep-beep-beeeep-beeeep-beeeep”). We finished off class pretending to Moon walk to the song, “Time to Shine”.

Day three, our last day of camp we spent talking all about the stars. Our pose of the day was Shooting Star Pose, and we also practiced Shooting Star Breath. This was again a fan favorite, because apparently your kids really enjoy jumping! Who knew? (insert smirk here).

We also did the Space Dance which was so much fun, I might have to create a Yogi Squad version of this song for YouTube. Make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss it!

We read and moved with some amazing books throughout the week, pictured below. All of these titles (and a ton more for the teachers) were selected from the Fort Worth Public Library!

And the FUMC teachers kept the learning in our Space theme going, reading tons of books when we weren’t together and doing some amazing craft projects with the kids like the one in the video below. I wish I had taken more photos!

Our 30 minute sessions together went fast and we didn’t get to play any of the games I had planned:

  • Red Light, Green Light, Rocket

  • Four Space Corners

  • Space Toega

All the more reason to sign up for Yogi Squad’s next camp, July 17-20th at FUMC! This kids yoga camp is infused with yoga, mindfulness exercises, literacy, crafts, and games to complement a new theme for each day. It’s going to be amazing, and I’d love to have your kiddos there.

All of the above activities are linked into one lesson plan below for your convenience. Give them a try… If you do, come back and let me know what you think!
